AI tools for PR: our top tips

At the start of the year, we laid out a few predictions for the PR landscape. Amongst them (you can see our full Mystic Meg-esque jottings here!), we confidently suggested AI *everything* would top of the list, especially with its promises to streamline and optimise our workflows.

But we also said that we shouldn’t count our chickens before they hatch. So, AI in PR - what’s it all about? Our very own Nikki Alvey investigated by attending a course run by the CIPR: Introduction to AI.

She said: “What a brilliant two-day course – I came away buzzing and a little exhausted if I’m honest! So much to take in, but I picked up some excellent tips and tricks. The tech is moving so quickly so I expect to do the course again next year and find that it has all changed again. There’s no standing still here.”

Here’s her top three takeaways:

  • Vary the platform you’re using as you’ll get different results. Be that Co-pilot, Gemini (formerly Bard), ChatGPT or other. Try different recording tools too – from Otter to Fireflies.

  • Ask AI to take on a specific role when carrying out research – that might be a sector expert, a particular age or gender.

  • Upgrade to the paid version to keep your searches more private but also so that you can upload files and ask it to summarise docs, perform analysis tasks and more!

We think there’s huge potential for AI to assist us day-to-day, helping us to uncover insights and interrogate data, as well as providing useful prompts or nudges to inspire creativity

Like all big change, AI can feel threatening and overwhelming. But we don’t see it that way. We see AI as a really clever collaborative assistant that can actually – help us to be more creative, productive and efficient. Will it replace us? We don’t think so. At its core, PR is still a people business, and relationship building is outside a robot’s grasp. Thankfully, for now, there are still many things a computer can’t do.

So, in our opinion, be more like Raye, who plans to embrace AI, work with it, and be as polite as possible along the way, because who knows what the future holds 😊
